About Lala Mountain Forest Reserve

Lala Mountain Forest Reserve, located in the northeastern part of Taiwan, is a lush, mountainous nature reserve celebrated for its ancient Taiwan red cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis), some of which are thousands of years old and among the oldest living trees in the country. Nestled within the Xueshan Range, this forest reserve spans dense woodlands at elevations ranging from approximately 1,000 to 2,000 meters. The terrain is characterized by steep slopes, moss-covered giant trees, and diverse understory vegetation, providing critical habitat for numerous wildlife species including endemic birds, insects, and mammals. The area enjoys a moist, temperate climate with frequent mist, adding to its mystical atmosphere. Historically, Lala Mountain has been a sacred site revered by local indigenous Atayal people, and it also symbolizes Taiwan’s rich cultural connection to nature conservation. Today, Lala Mountain offers visitors a variety of well-maintained trails through old-growth forests, making it a favored destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts seeking a serene yet awe-inspiring outdoor experience. Key landmarks include the iconic Giant Tree Cluster, featuring prehistoric cypress, and several observation decks providing panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
